I don't know about you guys, but I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s and we all know that means one thing: I was absolutely obsessed with Disney's The Little Mermaid. You know the drill. Singing the songs constantly, practicing some of her fancy dance moves in the local public pool. Buying mermaid edition barbie dolls that changed colour in the bath. It was an exciting time, and then one day someone had the bright idea of getting me to read the Hans Christen Andersen original.

This looks beautiful, right? Visually stunning. Too bad it sounds like a big piece of shit wrapped in death and dying.
And I hated it. What the shit was that?! It was violent! And depressing! And just all around kind of terrible and not nearly as fun and colourful as the Disney version. (I like happy endings and stuff, okay?)
So when we heard that Atonement Director Joe Wright was making a live action version of The Little Mermaid I was worried, and I wasn't the only one. Is it going to be super violent like the HCA story? Or surprisingly cute and heart-warming like Enchanted?
Oh right. This guy willingly picked up Atonement (oh god why did I ever actually read that book for school) and thought "We should totally make a movie out of this!"
Way to take something I love and make it something I never, ever want to see, Hollywood. I'll be over here re-watching Ghostbusters or something.
