Ever since the Vancouver Winter Games- oh, and a little show called Be Good, Johnny Weir- graced our lives, Figure Skating fic has been the latest RPF fandom to well, if not eat Fandom, at least nom on it a little. The Winter Games kink meme is nearing its two month anniversary and is still skating (see what I did there?) merrily along.

Because I live under a overlarge fluffy blue pillow (rocks are too uncomfortable) I must admit I've been mostly ignorant of the entire business. Until recently I could count the things I knew about Skating RPF on Frodo's hand:

1. Johnny Weir is fabulous.
2. Evan Lysacek could take a second gold medal in the Dumb As A Box of Hammers Olympics 2010.
3. The Cutting Edge is the greatest figure skating romance of all time.

That was basically it. And yet, Figure Skating RPF was creeping up on my delicious network something fierce, so much so that I had to take notice. And that's when I was pulled up short.

"What is this pairing I keep seeing? Johnny Weir and some girl named Stephanie Lambiel? Really?" I thought to myself, scrolling by. "Far be it from me to decry more ladies up in here, but I could have sworn Johnny skated for the other team. Are we all suddenly embracing het fic and I missed the memo? Or perhaps Fandom is radically subverting its own homo-centric tendencies by having an out gay man hook up with a woman? IDFK."

After weeks of skimming past this stuff in vague puzzlement, I was finally intrigued/bored enough to actually read one of the stories.

I quickly realized that I could easily take Silver in the DAABOH Olympics next to my boy Evan.

Because, right, Stephane "There's No 'I' In My Name" Lambiel is a guy who was on the 2010 Swiss figure skating team. Also, he's apparently an ambi-turner.

Whoops.

Moral of the story: I'm an idiot, Johnny Weir is still boning dudes on the internet and all is right with the world. Phew.

Sorry, Stephane and Johnny. I'll never doubt your gay love ever again. Unless it's born-as-a-girl genderfuck. Then that's okay.

Has this every happened to you? What totally wrong Fandom-related assumptions have you made?
