[recap] Scott Pilgrim VS The World (And My Heart)
NEWSFLASH: If you've been a Scott Pilgrim fan for awhile, or even if you just got into it pretty recently, you were probably worried about Michael Cera (that hipster kid who is always the same in all those terrible movies) playing the title role. (Wait, do I sound old now? I'm not old. I'm in my twenties and everything, guys.) The point is, Michael Cera is generally only capable of playing himself and not an actual character, but fear not: he actually did a good job!

I know, shocking. But it's true. Everyone who came out of the movie tonight had the same thing to say about what a relief it was, and how we totally loved the shit out of that thing. Scott Pilgrim VS The World is basically Revolutionary Girl Utena but starring a boy, his gay roommate who is super awesome, the band he happens to be in, a cute Asian girl, and a girl who is kind of like Doctor Who. Then throw in some Super Mario, some Final Fantasy (slash other classic fantasy RPG/etc). It's a romance along the lines of Final Fantasy X but without all that mushy bullshit and an equivalent amount of ass-kicking.

All of the things I love about video games are in there. They actually got the rights to use music from The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros., and yes, there are a lot of instances of bands playing and they are pretty great. Final Fantasy IV is actually a major plot point, so if you're a fan of classic gaming, you're going to love the shit out of this.

This movie contains but is not limited to:

Sadly, it's missing the awesome Toronto Reference Library fight, but all the band venues are there, and Knives Chau is actually pretty freaking badass. The visual effects are a hilarious and super effective mix of video game and cartoon references mixed in with Totally How Your Brain Works and actual shots of the comic mixed with animated shots from the comic. And each chapter of the comic is actually titled right into the movie, which I'm sure will help people unfamiliar with the jerky, sudden changes of topic in Scott Pilgrim to adjust.

Sudden change of topic: Wallace Wells is fucking awesome. That's him on the left, just chillin' before a big fight on a swanky movie set where his current crush will be playing a super cool action hero.

Wallace Wells needs you to love him. And you will.
But more importantly there is Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells. He is amazing. He is dead accurate. He is utterly convincing and totally seduces at least five dudes over the course of the movie while being super awesome and totally running Scott's life as an unpaid and under-appreciated manager (even if no one seems to know it, not even Wallace Wells). My only complaint would be that he did not at all times have a martini in one hand, but hey, I'm sure that might have been complicated. (Upside: when at home he is never wearing pants, which is totally accurate and awesome.)
In conclusion, if you like things that are awesome or cool or full of epic video-game style fight scenes and interesting narrative devices and stuff and maybe might like Toronto (or aren't sure yet, but probably would, you think, if you went there) you will like this movie and should go see it. It comes out in two weeks or whatever. You'll figure it out.
